{"id":9355,"date":"2013-08-04T12:00:11","date_gmt":"2013-08-04T16:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.Centives.net\/S\/?p=9355"},"modified":"2013-08-04T12:01:05","modified_gmt":"2013-08-04T16:01:05","slug":"realpolitik-returns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.Centives.net\/S\/2013\/realpolitik-returns\/","title":{"rendered":"Realpolitik Returns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.Centives.net\/S\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/080413_1555_Realpolitik1.jpg\" width=\"639\" height=\"461\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Economist argues that <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Realpolitik\">realpolitik<\/a> \u2013 the basing of diplomacy on power considerations \u2013 is back:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Last month Barack Obama rolled out the red carpet for the leader of Vietnam \u2013 helping to normalize relations between the two former combatants.<\/li>\n<li>Yet another former enemy \u2013 Cambodia \u2013 was harangued about human rights abuses in a &#8220;tense&#8221; meeting.<\/li>\n<li>Cambodia has been stumbling towards democracy with (admittedly imperfect) elections recently being held.<\/li>\n<li>Vietnam on the other hand refuses to hold elections and doesn&#8217;t tolerate political dissent.<\/li>\n<li>Why the difference in treatment then? Because Cambodia is a close ally of China \u2013 a power that could potentially rival the United States in the future.<\/li>\n<li>Vietnam stands up to China.
