He notes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Iran&#8217;s average birth rate is now similar to New England \u2013 the region with the lowest fertility in the United States.<\/li>\n<li>In Middle Eastern countries in particular the drop in birth rates has been record-breaking.<\/li>\n<li>This is a problem because, as Tyler Cowen <a href=\"These%20societies%20will%20be%20old%20before%20they%20will%20be%20wealthy.%20%20Which%20means%20perhaps%20they%20will%20never%20be%20wealthy.\">notes<\/a>: &#8220;These societies will be old before they will be wealthy. Which means perhaps they will never be wealthy.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>This doesn&#8217;t necessary have to be true. South Korea and Taiwan managed to grow despite declining birth rates.
