Bollywood Movie Rating Calculator

June 15, 2012 in Editorial

On the heels of the Hollywood Movie Rating Calculator we’ve created a Best Bollywood Movie Rating Website Calculator. As a movie-goer you have several options open to you when choosing which movie to watch. How do you decide which ones are worth your time? You could go to review aggregator websites such as Bollywood Hungama and IMDB, but there’s significant disagreement among them. Take Shahrukh Khan’s CGI enhanced adventure Ra.One for example: on Bollywood Hungama it has an amazing 4.5 star rating (equal to 90 on our scale) whereas IMDB’s users have given it a measly 46.

Centives decided to solve the problem by creating a calculator that asks you for your ratings of individual movies, and then determines which site’s relative rankings are most similar to yours. We surveyed user votes from Bollywood Hungama, IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes User Votes, and the ratings for the standard DVD versions of movies on Amazon.

If you want to go ahead and start using the calculator, then rate some of the movies (we recommend at least 10) on a scale from 0-100 below. If you prefer a five star scale system, then just convert those into numbers (1 star = 20, 2 stars = 40 etc.) Once you’re done rating, scroll down and find out which website’s ratings are best for you. Click on the ‘Advanced Results’ tab along the bottom to see expanded data. You can find notes about the data as well as some interesting conclusions below the calculator.

According to our data Amazon users are most likely to give movies a positive ranking. This isn’t surprising since the people who buy the DVDs of movies on Amazon are likely to have enjoyed it in the theaters. Bollywood Hungama isn’t far behind in giving high ratings to Bollywood movies. IMDB on the other hand was most likely to give Bollywood films low ratings.

Across all sites Taare Zameen Par, Chak De India, and 3 Idiots were the most highly ranked in our sample. Singh is King, Golmaal 3, and Housefull were the lowest ranked.

And now a note about our data selection. The thirty movies we selected above are the nominal highest grossing movies of all time. Using these movies has several advantages. First, because the numbers are not inflation adjusted, the movies are biased towards more recent ones which is good because you’re more likely to want to see what different websites say about newer movies (although it still contains highly successful older movies such as Hum Aapke Hain Kaun).

Second, by using box office success, rather than critical response, we get a range in the quality of movies. The list includes the critically acclaimed Lage Raho Munna Bhai, and the less well received Partner. Moreover the list is still biased towards higher quality productions which is likely what you’ll use this calculator for.
